Lisa tries out her office skills

Skills partnerships between YouthWorX NT and Down Syndrome Association NT are in full swing. This week Lisa Tiernan (pictured with YouthWorX NT’s Zoey Kellaway) tried out her office skills at the Health and Community Services Complaints Commission.

Lisa said she was having a great time at the office.

“I like the filing and shredding, but I like the typing the best,” Lisa said.

As part of the wider Project 21 programme, YouthWorX NT works closely with Down Syndrome Association NT and Batchelor Institute of Indigenous Education on the Skills 21 programme. The project partners work together to deliver Certificate 1 in Education and Skills Development which underpins the educational learning required for future employment opportunities.

Alex is Serving Up a Storm

Alex is putting his new work skills to great use at Gloria Jean's this week.

Alex McInnes, 21, is on a work placement as part of the Skills 21 Job Shadow programme.

Skills 21 is a partnership between YouthWorX NT and Down Syndrome Association NT to work with young people with intellectual disabilities on job skills.

Alex said he was having a great time at Gloria Jean's.

“My favourite part is meeting the staff and learning to use the touch screen,” Alex said.

Gloria Jean's is acting as a host organisation for the Job Shadow programme.

Store Manager Avon Collis said having Alex work for them had helped the team learn to train more effectively as well as enabling them do something for the community.

“Alex has learnt how to serve customers, prepare food, make cold drinks and how to use the coffee machine and has been given the opportunity to learn from experience rather than from a class room,” Avon said.
