In early 2024, Thomas commenced with our Career Launchpad program, eager to develop his independence and secure meaningful employment after recently graduating Year 12. With the support of dedicated staff and weekly workshops, Thomas worked hard to build his confidence and skills, successfully earning his Certificate I in Developing Independence.
Throughout the year, Thomas participated in coaching sessions and explored various work experience opportunities to gain real-world insights and enhance his employability. In April, his Youth Development Coach (YDC) reached out to Top End Air Conditioning and Maintenance, securing Thomas a work experience placement where he worked one full day per week. Although the placement presented some challenges, Thomas remained committed to improving after receiving constructive feedback from his supervisor, who identified areas for growth.
While the initial experience did shake his confidence, Thomas was determined to learn from it, and with the unwavering support of his YDC, he embraced the feedback as a valuable tool for personal and professional development. His resilience paid off when, in October, his YDC learned of a new opportunity at United Airconditioning, who were seeking a trades assistant and workshop labourer.
Without hesitation, Thomas was encouraged to apply, and thanks to his proactive approach, an interview was arranged the very next day. With the support of a YouthWorX NT staff member, Thomas attended the interview, where he impressed the team with his passion and determination. The next week, he was offered the position.
Today, Thomas is thriving in his new role at United Airconditioning, and he is grateful for the guidance and opportunities provided by the Career Launchpad program. He has recently gained his provisional drivers licence further enhancing his independence. His journey highlights the power of persistence, self-reflection, and the importance of having a supportive team behind you every step of the way.
Thomas’ story is a testament to the value of never giving up, even when faced with setbacks, and the incredible transformation that can happen when you take feedback and turn it into a positive.
